Distance Learning Programmes at Imperial College LondonThe DLP offers innovative postgraduate study programmes by distance learning in the following thematic areas: Our postgraduate programmes provide an understanding of contemporary problems and issues and teach students to analyse and find workable solutions. Our study materials are of high academic quality and of practical use to students in the relevant knowledge and skills they provide. We accept applications from suitably qualified candidates around the world. We provide comprehensive study packages backed by expert tutorial support, all administered by the University of London.
Who Are We?The University of London is a federation of more than 50 institutions, teaching over 75,000 students annually. Imperial College London is an independent constituent part of London University. The academic and research staff number over 2,700 and the College has about 10,000 students, one-third of whom are postgraduate. The College has an outstanding reputation based on the quality of its research and teaching. Eighteen Nobel Laureates have been members of the College. The University of London’s External Programme dates from 1849 and currently teaches 27,000 part-time students per annum, registered in more than 130 countries. The DLP originated at Wye College in 1988. Since then we have added an increasing number of degrees specifically prepared for distance learning students. The Advantages of Learning at a DistanceFOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER ADVANCEMENTProfessional development broadening and update: There is a growing appreciation amongst qualified professionals that they need to be aware of new ideas in their own and other disciplines in order to carry out their responsibilities more effectively. Increasingly, a multidisciplinary approach to analysis, planning and problem solving is needed. ACCESS TO MODERN EDUCATION, UP-TO-DATE IDEAS, USEFUL SKILLSIn-service and in-country education and training: Some potential candidates are not able to undertake fulltime study at home or abroad because their employers are unable to release them for large blocks of time. The DLP offers the opportunity to study while continuing in full-time employment. The real cost of replacing staff in full-time education is often under-estimated. In addition, studying whilst in-service allows first hand implementation of new skills and ideas. A FAMILY-FRIENDLY WAY OF LEARNINGStudy in your own home and at your own pace: Domestic responsibilities and family commitments often prevent extremely able professionals from undertaking continuing education programmes. Distance learning is a means of overcoming this common constraint. SAVING TRAVEL AND LIVING EXPENSESCost effectiveness: It is increasingly expensive for students to undertake full-time residential study abroad, particularly for citizens of developing countries for whom scholarships are in very limited supply. Taking into account living expenses and fees, the cost of studying with the DLP is much less than the cost of full-time residential study abroad, and can be spread over five years. LIFELONG LEARNINGAccess: The design of our study programmes with entry at either MSc or Postgraduate Diploma level, or via the Occasional Student Scheme, also increases access. The Occasional Student Scheme caters for those wishing to PROFESSIONAL NETWORKINGThe ‘virtual classroom’: As we explain in the guide, an increasing number of our distance learning students are participating in electronic seminars and other networked activities. This opens up opportunities for a range of contacts and peer-learning experiences that enrich distance learning.
