Biological Sciences at Brunel University

"The Independent"newspaper recently hailed Biology as "the ultimate 21st century degree" because of the wide array of career options open to graduates in the biological sciences. At Brunel we have one of the United Kingdom's most enviable and long-standing records for enabling our graduates to move on to high-quality employment. We are therefore in the best possible position to offer you a bright future and a fast-track start to your career as a practising scientist.

Biological scientists at Brunel have an international reputation in cellular, sub-cellular and genetic areas, are part of the Brunel Institute of Cancer Genetics and Pharmacogenomics, and have played a major role in achieving national breakthroughs in skin, breast and prostate cancers.

Our renowned research groups feed specialist knowledge and an enthusiasm for discovery into the teaching at every level. Current interests include cancer genetics, ageing, infertility, nuclear structure and damage to the environment by man-made chemicals. We are particularly proud of the recent establishment of a cancer research institute, a research group in cell and chromosome biology and one in the new and exciting field of bioinformatics - the use of computer-based technology to address biological questions.

We have extensive research laboratories with facilities in human molecular genetics and suites for human cell culture, human gene mapping and DNA sequencing, and fluorescent microscopy and 3D image analysis.

Our Department has a team of enthusiastic teaching staff and several major innovative research groups.

Biochemistry BSc

Our aim is to provide a broad understanding of modern biochemistry and associated laboratory methodology from the basic composition and structure of living matter to intermediary metabolism, molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology, metabolic control processes and physical biochemistry.

Medical Biochemistry BSc

The aim of the Biochemistry group of courses is to provide a broad understanding of modern biochemistry and associated laboratory methodology from the basic composition and structure of living matter to intermediary metabolism, molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology, metabolic control processes and physical biochemistry.

Medical Biochemistry deals specifically with aspects related to human disease, and your final year project will normally be clinically-related.

Our aim is to give you a full appreciation and awareness of the wide and modern concepts of this field.

Biology BSc

The aim of the Biology group of courses is to provide a sound knowledge of basic biology from the genetic and molecular through to whole organism level. There is particular emphasis on the organism within its environment and this is related to the key needs of mankind, the problems we face and to the special needs of industry at every stage.

The teaching of modern biology has been revolutionised in recent years. There is now less emphasis on the anatomical aspects of plants and animals and more on molecular and cellular processes. Modern biology encompasses medicine, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology and the environment in addition to a study of whole organisms.

There is particular emphasis on the organism within its environment and this is related to the key needs of mankind, the problems we face, and to the special needs of industry at every stage. This course will provide you not just basic knowledge and understanding but also a proper feel for how principles can be applied to real problems.

Medical Biology BSc

Medical Biology deals specifically with aspects related to human disease, and your final year project will normally be clinically-related. You will take a broad range of core courses at Levels 1 and 2. At Level 3, you will be able to select from a wide choice of option modules. You will usually be associated with one of our research groups or with a staff member's research specialism for your individual project or dissertation.

Brunel University

The name of Brunel University has become as well-known and respected in engineering circles as was the name of Isambard Kingdom Brunel a hundred years ago. Both reputations are well deserved, reflecting outstanding technical competence, creativity and commitment which have resulted in important advances in science and knowledge benefiting the lives of countless people. However, today, Brunel University's influence extends far beyond the fields of engineering, science and technology, which were its traditional strengths. A long succession of developments and mergers has brought the University from modest beginnings to a major force on the United Kingdom higher education scene.
