Study Furniture Design in the United Kingdom

Chippendale International School of Furniture

The Chippendale International School of Furniture

The Chippendale International School of Furniture offers a unique 30 week course in furniture design, making and restoration. The small number of students, one-to-one learning environment and the intensive practical tuition make our school unique. You will benefit from the teachings and experience of the specialised visiting lecturers and the expertise of the permanent tutors and friendly support staff. Students gain privileged access to some of the best known historical houses and ancestral homes to examine antique furniture in its natural setting, as well as visiting busy furniture design workshops.

After graduation from the school many students have gone on to great achievements in the arts world. Indeed, the school's Principal often uses his many contacts to help students find practical placements and gain work experience. Many former students now run successful businesses in their native countries, others have gone on to lead distinguished careers in the arts world. All have profited from the imaginative teaching and the practical experience, which make The Chippendale International School of Furniture a unique and highly respected institution.

The aim of the school is to develop craftsmen and women with expertise and professionalism, who have a thorough practical knowledge, balanced with a sound theoretical and technical awareness. But in these days of distance learning and instructional books and videos, why come to a furniture school?

The reason is simple - it is living and working with wood in the atmosphere of a busy workshop; it is seeing the real life situation and understanding the professional speed that is expected in the commercial world. A book can teach you the basics, can show you how to hold a chisel, but it will not show you the amount of pressure to apply, nor the manual dexterity required, to achieve a quality finish. A book cannot teach you how to obtain a perfect colour match, nor allow you to examine original pieces in the company of highly skilled craftsmen. This is the essence of the course at the Chippendale International School of Furniture - teaching practical skills in a stimulating workshop environment.

Students receive a combination of lectures, demonstrations and practical experience. Project work is carefully structured to meet the level of the individual student's ability. In Terms 2 and 3 students are increasingly encouraged to work on their own initiative and to their own designs, which will be exhibited at the Graduation Evening.

The reputation of the Chippendale International School of Furniture rests not only on the course content but on the extensive program of visits. On visits to private houses and museums, students can see what they are learning embodied in beautiful pieces of furniture in their proper setting. Visits to other professional workshops give valuable insights into the commercial operation of a furniture business.

The Location

One of the many reasons that students choose to come to the school is the beautiful location and its proximity to Edinburgh -Scotland's vibrant capital city. The school itself is set in the heart of the East Lothian country side, in the east of Scotland. Located deep amongst beautiful rolling hills, the school is only half an hour from the historic city of Edinburgh with its inimitable culture and vitality. The School is set in four acres of grounds, half a mile outside the picturesque village of Gifford, its hilltop position offering panoramic views of the surrounding unspoilt countryside.

Our truly international school attracts students from around the world. For many of them, it is their first visit to Britain and the climate and culture is totally different from what they are used to. Each year, new students are welcomed by Scotland's wonderfully warm, bright and mild October weather. The soft 'mist-like' autumn rain, the mild climate and the absence of mosquitoes really surprise the first-time visitors, who usually don't know what to expect. Most, however, are aware that there is a lot of rain here!
