Study for an International Baccalaureate in the United Kingdom
Exeter College International BaccalaureateThe
International Baccalaureate is a unique course with an international
perspective at its core. It is a course which attracts lively, curious
students who wish to study a range of subjects and not to narrow their
choices at sixteen. It is a coherent course which gives breadth and
depth in six subjects as well as having additional elements such as
Theory of Knowledge and Community, Action and Service. The
International Baccalaureate is a course for all students at this level,
not only the very academic. The
International Baccalaureate provides a prestigious alternative to either
the A level academic or the General Diploma vocational routes. The IB
was born of efforts to establish a common curriculum and university
entrance qualification for students moving from one country to another.
The IB creators believed that students should share academic experience
that would emphasise critical thinking, inter-cultural understanding and
exposure to a variety of points of view. They anticipated today's
global economics, mass international travel and the break-down of
traditional, national barriers. The
IB Diploma has earned a reputation for rigorous assessment, giving
successful students access to the world's leading universities. The
programme's grading system is criterion referenced, meaning hat each
student's performance is measured against clearly defined levels of
achievement. These standards are consistent from one examination
session to the next and are applied to all schools and colleges across
the world. 2013 was a year of outstanding success for IB students at Exeter
College.
Many students gained outstanding individual points scores out of a
maximum of 45 points.
Three Exeter College students achieved 40 points or more which is the
threshold for entry to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. These
successes demonstrate that Exeter is an ideal location in which to offer
the IB. We
are encouraged by increasingly higher numbers of applications to do the
IB course this year. This has enabled us to increase the range of
subjects offered:
