Study for an International Baccalaureate in the United Kingdom

Exeter College International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate is a unique course with an international perspective at its core. It is a course which attracts lively, curious students who wish to study a range of subjects and not to narrow their choices at sixteen. It is a coherent course which gives breadth and depth in six subjects as well as having additional elements such as Theory of Knowledge and Community, Action and Service. The International Baccalaureate is a course for all students at this level, not only the very academic.

Exeter College is one of the few centres in the South West which offers the International Baccalaureate and, over ten years, has had an excellent record of achievement. Pass rates are consistently high and a good number of students have gained over 40 out of a maximum 45 points, something which is achieved by only 2% of students worldwide. Many staff who teach on the IB are examiners which means that they have insight and expertise to offer their students. IB students have gone on to university to study on a diverse range of courses from medicine to Disaster Management. Universities in the United Kingdom and worldwide see the IB as an excellent pre-degree qualification.

The International Baccalaureate provides a prestigious alternative to either the A level academic or the General Diploma vocational routes. The IB was born of efforts to establish a common curriculum and university entrance qualification for students moving from one country to another. The IB creators believed that students should share academic experience that would emphasise critical thinking, inter-cultural understanding and exposure to a variety of points of view. They anticipated today's global economics, mass international travel and the break-down of traditional, national barriers.

The IB Diploma has earned a reputation for rigorous assessment, giving successful students access to the world's leading universities. The programme's grading system is criterion referenced, meaning hat each student's performance is measured against clearly defined levels of achievement. These standards are consistent from one examination session to the next and are applied to all schools and colleges across the world.

2013 was a year of outstanding success for IB students at Exeter College.

  • 28 students completed the IB programme in 2013
  • overall pass rate of 96% compared with a world pass rate of 81%.

Many students gained outstanding individual points scores out of a maximum of 45 points.

  • 33% of Exeter College students achieved 35 points or more (31% world rate)
  • Highest individual points score of 42, placing two students in the top 3% in the world

Three Exeter College students achieved 40 points or more which is the threshold for entry to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. These successes demonstrate that Exeter is an ideal location in which to offer the IB.

We are encouraged by increasingly higher numbers of applications to do the IB course this year. This has enabled us to increase the range of subjects offered:

  • Beginners Japanese as well as French, Spanish and Italian
  • Music and Film Studies as well as Art

Typical IB programmes include:

  • Higher level biology, chemistry and psychology with standard level English, French and maths
  • Higher level English, history, psychology with standard level Spanish, environmental systems and maths studies

Exeter College students have gone on to study a wide variety of courses at a huge range of universities including:

  • Physics at Oxford and Durham Universities
  • Biochemistry at Bristol University
  • History at York, Southampton or Birmingham Universities
  • Medicine at St Georges Hospital Medical School, Peninsula Medical School, Bristol or Keele Universities
