English Language Centre

King's College London

University of London

King's has a long tradition of providing its students with English language and academic skills support and today it is the job of the English Language Centre to maintain that tradition. The Centre, which is accredited by both the British Council and BALEAP (the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes), has a central College remit of preparing and supporting all students in language and academic study skills throughout their King's College life. It offers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programmes throughout the year, including a highly regarded and rigorous 9 month Diploma in English & Academic Studies with both undergraduate and postgraduate streams. On this programme, students study core academic and skills modules and choose from a number of optional academic modules delivered by subject specialists.

In the summer the Centre runs pre-sessional programmes that cater for all students with conditional offers and for those with unconditional offers who wish to prepare for their university life.

These programmes currently have a 90% success rate in helping students reach their required language level. There are twelve, eight and five week pre-sessional programmes.

The Centre is also developing a wider range of subject foundation and pre-masters pathway programmes. These will start from September 2008 with the first intake on the Graduate Diploma in War Studies and English.

A key part of the Centre's activities lies in the provision of academic literacy and in-sessional language and skills support for all students, including native speakers, engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate study at the College. Courses are offered in key academic skill areas such as effective presentation skills, critical thinking skills, academic writing and dissertation writing skills as well as in language areas such as grammar and pronunciation. One-to-one and online tutorial services are also available. All in-sessional and academic literacy courses are free for King's College students and offered across all sites.

In addition, the ELC services the English language needs of various external commercial, legal and other institutions by designing and teaching tailor-made courses. The ELC founded a highly successful and innovative MA in ELT & Applied Linguistics (now run by the Department of Education and Professional Studies). Moreover, it is a thriving centre for Cultural Studies, collaborating with the British Council and with other universities and colleges world-wide and publishing extensively in the field.
