The University of Leicester

The University of Leicester is an international centre of learning with a worldwide reputation. It is a traditional British university founded in 1921 offering undergraduate degrees, masters courses and research programmes. Many postgraduate courses are available by distance learning.

Citizens of over eighty countries are represented on campus. Each year, there are more than 1000 students from outside the United Kingdom studying the full range of subjects and degrees courses available.

The International Office will provide all the information you need about applying for a course at the University of Leicester and can advise on Scholarships, English Language programmes and acceptability of international qualifications.

Representatives of the University visit many different countries each year to advise prospective students by attending Education Fairs, visiting schools and colleges or holding presentations at British Council offices.

The University has a Students' Union Officer with responsibility for international students. A member of the Welfare Office is specifically responsible for advising international students on issues such as visas, employment, finance and cultural adjustment.

The University greatly values the contribution which is made to its life by international students and holds a special introduction to the University and life in Leicester for new students from overseas at the beginning of the autumn and spring semesters.

The Study Abroad Programme at the University of Leicester

There are two ways that you can come to the University of Leicester as a study abroad student, either on a formal university exchange in which you continue to pay your tuition fees to your home university. Alternatively, if your university does not have an agreement you can pay fees directly to the University of Leicester as a fee payer.

Not sure you qualify as an exchange student please email studyabroad@le.ac.uk and we'll let you know!

The Study Abroad Programme

European Union students

Students from EU countries attending courses at universities where they do not have an Erasmus/Socrates agreement with the University of Leicester are welcome to apply for our Study Abroad European Union programme. For information on dates and fees please refer to our website http://www.le.ac.uk/international/sa/eustudents.html

Exchange students your options.

You can come for one semester, fall or spring, or for the full academic year either way you'll take exactly the same courses as British students studying for degrees at the University of Leicester. You select modules totalling 60 Leicester credits per semester (30 ECTS credits) from those listed on our website at www.le.ac.uk /international/sa/courses The only difference between one semester and a full year is if you are at Leicester for the entire academic year you will be expected to follow that same assessment procedures as other United Kingdom students in all the modules you take. One semester students are not normally required to stay for formal assessment periods instead extra written assignments are usually given in place of written examinations. You continue to pay your tuition fees to your current university whilst having the opportunity to travel and explore a new culture and a new educational system.

Explore our fee paying options.

At the University of Leicester we believe that we offer value for money in the study abroad programmes that we have put together. An inclusive one semester package called the 'Leicester Semester' allows you to pay one price that covers not only your accommodation, some meals and academic programme but also includes study visits and orientations. This option is available in either the fall or spring and if you choose to come in the spring we have included a guided study tour to Europe. Alternatively you could choose the 'No Frills Leicester Semester' designed for students who want the convenience of paying one price for their academic programme, accommodation and some meals but who prefer the freedom of taking trips in the United Kingdom or in Europe at a time that suits you. Both options provide excellent value for money and as such have limited accommodation choice some of which may be in shared rooms.

You don't have to go 'all-inclusive' if you prefer to pay for your accommodation and tuition separately you can. By doing this you will have full choice from the available accommodation that the University of Leicester has to offer and full details on our accommodation can be found at www.le.ac.uk /accommodation
