Newcastle College Language School

The Language Centre

The Language Centre at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne has long experience (since 1969) of helping overseas students to improve their English for university study through high quality English language courses. It was, for example, one of the first British universities to offer a Summer School for students of English.

In today's international community, an understanding of different languages and cultures is central to effective communication and co-operation between nations, peoples and businesses. The Language Centre at Newcastle plays a central role in the University's international strategy, providing a focus for language teaching, learning and research

There follows brief description of what we have to offer. For more detailed information on any of these areas, consult the highlighted areas in the text below.

A state-of-the-art

Open Access Centre

with computers, audio, video and satellite television viewing facilities allows you to learn languages in your own time and at your own speed. Advice is on hand if needed. The Centre also manages four modern language laboratories, one of which is equipped with an interpreting facility.

We also serve the wider community, providing, for example, courses in English for business people from overseas. A subscription scheme for business language learners provides guided self-instruction, including use of the Department's facilities.

Classes in English

for international students on degree programmes at this University provide support when it is needed in academic writing, listening, pronunciation, grammar, etc

In addition we run

Intensive English language programmes

in preparation for university studies, including a one-year International Foundation Programme intended to prepare international students for undergraduate courses.

Our English Language

Summer Schools give overseas undergraduates the opportunity to sample life at a British university.

An

advisory and testing service

in English provides the necessary information on level of language ability.

We also offer training in

language learning techniques and guidance in developing self-study programmes for self-directed language learners.

Facilities

As a student on courses offered by the Language Centre, you are entitled to use University facilities, including the Computing Service and the Health Centre, free of charge.

You will be given a unique university computer login and email address which you can use while you are studying at Newcastle.

All textbooks are provided. Once you have paid your tuition fee, there are no additional costs.

Orientation

Each of our programmes begins with an Orientation and Induction Programme which is designed to welcome you as a new student and to introduce you to living and studying in Newcastle. You will hear talks giving information on practical matters and participate in tours of the Language Centre, the University and the city centre, which is just a short walk away. During the Orientation Programme you will also register and take an English language placement test.

You will be taught through English in multinational groups of about twelve
