St Peter’s School of English: Supporting your success

St Peter’s School is a family-run, medium-sized school where we have been teaching English to foreign students since 1966. We have a friendly and supportive atmosphere and most of our staff have been with us for many years and are very experienced.

St Peter's has been accredited by the British Council since 1972 and we are also a member of English UK. The school is situated inside an attractive, period building in the centre of the historic city of Canterbury, (pop 40,000).

We are just a few minutes' walk from the magnificent Cathedral and the city centre with its shops, cafes and sites and from the medieval streets and their often ancient buildings. In the evening students can go to the theatre or cinema or relax in one of the many restaurants and pubs, or attend the regular social evenings at the school. There are seven classrooms with use of DVD, video and audio equipment. There is also an internet centre with free wi-fi where and nine free broadband computers plus a library of audio visual materials where students can listen to stories, practise listening comprehension and work on grammar and vocabulary. At the top of the building there is a games room and a large beamed sitting area with a small cafe bar, where students can meet their friends for a cup of tea and a chat. During the summer months they can relax in the private, beautiful, 18th-century walled garden available for staff and students.

Small class sizes give you a good opportunity to use your English and a chance to make friends. We also understand that your experience outside the classroom is very important to your learning. Canterbury is a city with a good cultural heritage, and we can arrange homestay with local people so you can experience English traditions.

About the school

It is important to choose a language school where you are happy. At St Peter’s, we offer a unique package combining the high standards of a British Council accredited school with a caring environment and a great location.

We accept groups and individuals. The classes are multinational with a maximum of 16 students per class although most average 8 students. The majority of our students are aged between 18 and 35. Our minimum age of enrolment is 16 years old but we also welcome more mature students over 35.

Our teachers are all qualified professionals with the minimum of the Cambridge CELTA/Trinity College certificate. All have English as their first language and some have taught English abroad and speak several languages.

In addition to quality teaching, we aim to offer you the best value for money and competitive rates for this location.

A great location

Canterbury’s famous cathedral is a world heritage site. The school is only a few minutes’ walk from this beautiful building, in the heart of Canterbury’s historic conservation area: the King’s Mile Precinct.

The school is on a quiet street less than five minutes from the main shopping area of Canterbury where you can find everything from designer stores to museums and cafes.

Excellent travel links

It is possible to walk from St Peter’s to both of Canterbury’s stations, with a range of national and international services. The city’s new, 68-mile high-speed rail link takes you to central London in just one hour. Eurostar services to France are also accessible from nearby Ashford, 20 minutes from Canterbury by train.

We are just 15 minutes from Dover by train, where ferry services operate to France.

Local buses and national coaches run from a central bus station ten minutes from the school.

Canterbury has good road and rail links with the major UK airports and we offer an airport transfer service for St Peter’s students.

Kent has its own independent airport based an hour from Canterbury with specialist flights to Scotland and Europe – so you have plenty of options to continue your journey after you finish your studies.
