University of
Aberdeen
United Kingdom
History
and Excellence
Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is one of the United Kingdom’s most
internationally distinguished universities. It has a student population
of around 14,000 and a large international community of students drawn
from 120 different countries. The University has an excellent reputation
for teaching quality and research, and, over the years, has had four
Nobel Prize winners.
Leading in
the 21st Century
85% of Aberdeen’s staff are
working in departments that are recognised as centres of national and
international excellence, so students are taught by some of the best.
The University is at the
forefront in many areas of arts and social sciences, in science,
computing, engineering and technology, and in ground-breaking
disciplines focused firmly on the 21st century, such as
Bio-Medical Computing Science. 97% of Aberdeen graduates walk into good
jobs, research posts or further study within six months of graduating.
Choice and
Flexibility
Flexibility and individuality
are the University’s real strengths. With over 590 first degree
programmes on offer, students can mix, match and switch subjects as they
discover new interests on route to their tailor-made degree. Students
are encouraged to ‘tag on’ subjects that not only interest them but will
be useful and will make them attractive to future employers. The
University has numerous international connections with universities in
North America and across Europe, affording students the opportunity to
study abroad as part of their degree.
A Superb
Environment
The University has a beautiful central campus where ancient buildings
sit side by side with modern, newly refurbished, first-class
laboratories, up-to-date computing facilities and the latest library
technology. A place in University Halls is normally guaranteed to all
students during their first year, and these are either on, or within
short walking distance of the main teaching site.
Social and sporting
facilities are outstanding. The University has first-class sporting
facilities on-campus and over 50 sports clubs to join. There are also
over 100 societies for those with other interests, whether they be
political, spiritual, theatrical or musical. The city of Aberdeen truly
has something for everyone - from the bustling city centre of Europe’s
energy capital to the superb countryside and coastline in an area rich
in historic and natural interest. Students describe Aberdeen as having
an unrivalled social scene, which caters for all tastes in arts,
culture, leisure and entertainment. Communication and travel links are
excellent, which means getting around the rest of Scotland and the United Kingdom is
easy.
