Mechanical Engineering and Product Design Aston University In common with many universities, our role is one of scholarship, teaching and research. As our name implies, we are primarily concerned with mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering but we also encompass some aspects of materials technology and manufacturing. Our other main discipline is Engineering Design
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering is part of the School of Engineering and applied science that integrates major subject areas of relevance to industry and commerce. The degree programmes offer you career flexibility and opportunity of choice, which is reflected in the high employment rates of students graduating from Aston. During the 3-4 years of your degree programme your personal objectives and the market may change and exposure to a broad based approach is important in enhancing your market potential. The operation of the Mechanical Engineering group within an integrated school allows the engineering courses to provides a breadth of activity including management and financial aspects. A major example of project activity is the design and build of a racing car as part of an International competition. This provides both the opportunity for individual projects and a group project where you will be involved in design project planning and management. The resulting vehicle is then entered in a national competitive 3 day event at the NEC in June. Such projects allow both the Mechanical engineering students and the students from the Design programmes to contribute. Medical engineering is a major research thrust and deals with the needs for modern high technology tools and aids and forms a major source of undergraduate projects. This involves innovative approaches to design, instrumentation, sensors, materials and control engineering Product Design Training to be a designer is a demanding, creative, exciting and fulfilling experience. At Aston University we believe it is important that you also become innovative, enterprising and successful. Our courses are project based with hands on learning experiences in our studios, workshops, laboratories and model making facilities.
