Course director Gavin Carver worked within Kent's drama department for 12 years before establishing this new degree. He has wide experience within the industry as a theatre designer, stage manager, production manager, lighting designer, and carnival designer.
Gavin said:
"Many Events degrees put the emphasis on management, which is, of course, an important aspect of the work. But at Kent, the emphasis is first on creative ideas and on the design of the event, ensuring that it meets the needs of the client and is as inventive as possible.
"The course will help to create a new generation of skilled professionals, while providing a much-needed analysis of the social and political importance of celebratory arts. The creative events industry has also welcomed the prospect of having a well-qualified graduate workforce.
"A big bonus of the programme is that it makes use of our industry contacts. We will be working alongside professionals, who will come into the University to teach on our modules, and students will have the chance to go out to work in the industry. This way we can ensure that the course is current and relevant."
MEET THE PROFESSIONALS
From your very first year at Kent, we make sure you meet professionals within the industry. A number of key figures from the business, covering a range of event types (such as large scale concerts, multicultural carnivals, international brand launches, weddings, and conferences), will introduce their work in lectures and discussions. Many of the practical projects will have input from working event designers who will offer inspiration and guidance, and make sure that your work is consistent with current professional practice. Sometimes these professionals will see your final presentations and offer helpful feedback.
Students will also have the chance to go out into the industry, carrying out research and doing work experience. In the first year you will research the events culture in the area and work on a local event. In later years you may opt to spend a large proportion of one term working with an events company. To get a sense of the range of the companies in the field, some of which you may have the chance to work with, take a look at these websites.

CAREERS
According to employment statistics, Kent graduates are doing better than ever in the job market. Figures from 2004 reveal that six months after graduation, only 2.9 per cent of students with a degree from Kent were without a job or study opportunity. While this degree is specifically designed to prepare its graduates for a career in events design and production, it will also act as an excellent basis for any career that requires individuals to be organised, creative, efficient managers, problem solvers and good communicators.
Some careers that graduates might follow are:
-
celebratory arts worker (designing carnivals and similar events) -
party planner/wedding designer -
designer of corporate events -
performance production or stage manager -
designer of educational or heritage events -
conference organiser -
arts administrator -
culture/arts/tourism officer.
