The School of Historical Studies University of LeicesterAt Leicester's School of Historical Studies, we have a very wide range of study opportunities for undergraduates, taught postgraduates and research postgraduates. Our courses range across world history from the early middle ages to the contemporary world. Our teaching is rated excellent by the QAA and we scored a Grade 5 in RAE 2001 for research of international quality.The Leicester School of Historical Studies is home to 400 undergraduate students studying for a degree in History or Contemporary History, or on one of our specialist joint degrees. Our courses are taught by more than 30 historians, which makes the School of Historical Studies at the University of Leicester one of the biggest of its kind. The School has specialist teaching and research strengths in Urban History, English Local History, Medieval History, Eighteenth-Century History, Twentieth-Century History, and Economic History. We are also home to the Centre for Urban History, the Centre for English Local History, the Centre for American Studies (with the Department of English), the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies, the Medieval Research Centre and the Centre for the History of Religious and Political Pluralism. UNDERGRADUATE STUDY You can study History at Leicester as a single subject degree or choose to specialise in Contemporary History, or to link History with another subject, such as Ancient History, Archaeology, Politics, or International Relations. You can also study History at Leicester within the Combined Arts programme, which allows you to link your love of History with English, Art History, Modern Languages, or as part of a special Medieval Studies degree. With all of our degrees you can choose to spend a year abroad at a European University on the Socrates programme. POSTGRADUATE STUDY The School of Historical Studies at Leicester is a vibrant research community and offers opportunities for advanced study in a wide range of areas through a range of taught MA degrees and MPhil and PhD programmes, which are available full time and part time. Our Graduate school currently contains between 50 to 60 MA students and an equal number of research students (MPhil and PhD) pursuing advanced research in subjects ranging from the early middle ages to the modern world. Many of our postgraduate students study part time. Dedicated study space and computing facilities are provided for postgraduates in The Marc Fitch Historical Institute, and a regular programme of research seminars with staff, postgraduate and visiting speakers, takes place on a weekly basis within the School and its Research Centres. The Marc Fitch Historical Institute comprises separate study areas, a common room and a computer suite. Fully networked computers are also provided in student study areas.
