Study Materials Sciences in the United Kingdom

Materials Science Centre University of Manchester

If you are considering a career in Materials Sciences, come and study this exciting and stimulating subject in a 6* rated centre at The University of Manchester, the United Kingdom's most popular University, receiving more applications for undergraduate study than any other British University.

Have you ever wondered what materials are required to make a Formula 1 nosecone resist impact during a crash (see image left) or if you want to use the very latest techniques and state-of-the-art scientific equipment to better understand the properties of materials (see image right) then Materials Science may be for you.

We have the largest and most broadly based University Materials activity in the Western world,

bringing together over 60 members of academic staff and expertise in a number of disciplines,

directly focused to the needs of industry. We will aim to teach you to handle the world's physical and technological resources in ways that are creative and responsible. In the most recent Research Activity Exercise, we were rated at 6*.

The purpose-built Materials Science Centre

occupies an excellent and well-equipped building with its own lecture theatres, laboratories, state-of-the-art equipment, computer suite and common room. We have extensive collaboration with industrial partners, including Smith and Nephew, Johnson and Johnson, 3M, Corus, British Aerospace, Rolls Royce and many others. If you choose an MEng in Materials Science and Engineering or Biomedical Materials Science, you can take either of these options with industrial experience where you spend your third year in a company of your choosing, putting into practice the concepts you have studied and gaining valuable experience of management and organisational behaviour.

The Centre has an international reputation for teaching and research in materials, with long established links to major institutions worldwide. We have recently enhanced our experimental facilities, which combined with the wide-ranging expertise means that we can provide an excellent environment for teaching and research.
